Weekend the Third (II): Hot Wheels

Sunday... and what a day it was!

All of us younglings from work: Cherry and Maybelline (the Optoms), Alaric and Edmund (the Interns) and us four, all met up for a bit of fun!

We organised to meet at Bedok MRT station at 11am, only to get there too late and miss the first bus. Despite a 50 minute wait for the next bus, we all sat around, got drinks and snacks to tide the time: it was promising to be a really hot day!

My breakfast: kaya waffle for S$1.60, from a bakery and waffle stand at the Bedok bus interchange.

So we boarded the 401 bus, eventually getting to East Coast Park. Now that park is huge: if ever you want to go bike riding, roller skating, or any other form of wheeled transport, then that is the place. No matter which part of the Park you start from, you are likely to be able to rent a bike, a two- or four- (and we even saw a six-) seater cart/bike, or rollerskate. Scooters and Heelys are strictly BYO.

Our plan for the day was to enjoy the sunshine in whichever way possible - most of us rented bikes, with Alaric, Maybelline and me on rollerskates. The other two skate frequently and brought their own sets - Me: I can't ride a bike. Despite going on the luge and Segway yesterday, rollerblading is still a bit beyond me... but I had a go. Skate hire is S$12 for an hour, but there was a promotion for the 2nd hour free. Helmet hire is an extra S$2, and also S$2 for pads (knee, elbow and wrist pads as a set together).

So the others had fun, whilst I learnt to rollerblade for the first time ever. Despite getting a small blister, I did okay, stacking it once or twice. It helped heaps that Alaric baby-sit me for most of the time, giving guidance and tips. My back, however, killed having to lean forwards the whole time. Eventually I got really tired - since I couldn't match the others for speed anyway, Andy was willing to give me a ride on his bike.

I don't mean sitting on a one-person bike with him :P - he let me latch on and glide beside him whilst he did all the pedalling. With that, we caught up with the others by Bedok Jetty much later.

I did manage to get some decent views like this whilst being pulled along :D

After returning the skates and bikes, we stopped at Burger King for a snack, before heading home to our Apartments. As in: everyone came :D

We had planned to have a BBQ after the Park, but decided in advance that it would be easier to book the BBQ at our apartments rather than to chance those at East Coast Park. And besides, we did have air-con at our place... :P

And this playground too...

The interesting thing in Singapore is that there is an online company dedicated to cater for BBQ events: you log in and make your selections online, and they deliver to your BBQ site. In this case, our hotel reception received it and brought it up to our room for us :D

So we spent the afternoon starting the charcoal fires (with the popular Cock brand fire starters), cooking and eating. Partway through, we all agreed that it would be easier to microwave some of the food to eat sooner - which we did. Some of us still took the microwaved food and held it above the charcoal, just to get that seared sensation!

So there we were, poolside at the BBQ area, enjoying the water, setting sun, and the entertainment of cooking our own food. At about 7 though, it was getting late and we thought about packing up. Instead, we took the remaining food and played Guess the Number: the 'boss' picked a number between 1 to 99, and we had to avoid guessing the number. The boss would say higher or lower, though... the aim was to avoid guessing the right number - the penalty was to eat two remaining items of food. At first, people played with gusto before the Satay Rule came into effect: everyone was attacking the Satays, so you had to have either a chicken wing, or a prawn, as one of your penalty pieces.

By 8, most of the food had disappeared, so we headed back up to relax and play a few drinking games. Needless to say, there was a bit of entertainment going on :)

Things pretty much wrapped up by 9.45 - people either had to show up for work, or for classes (the interns) tomorrow.

And that's pretty much from me for this weekend: two days of fun and sun, all over and done :)
